Art is many things, but above all else it is a reflection. From Duchamp’s Fountain to Dore’s The Burial of Sarah, all artwork is a reflection of how the artist sees the world around them. It is inspired heavily by the influences of everyday life. The stimuli of life seeps in through our pores and bleeds on to stage, screen, and canvas. But what do we do as artists when the world around us isn’t as beautiful as it could- or even should- be.
Artists wield the only weapon that can combat the brutal realities of everyday life; the imagination. “Revolutionary Imagination” is a concept centered around hope for a better future. When the powers that be are at their most oppressive, it is easy to feel hopeless.
It is easy to see a world plagued by racism, genocide, homophobia and xenophobia as “too far gone.” However, that is counterproductive.…
